Have you ever suffered from a spell of vertigo (a spinning sensation)? Or, do you get dizzy with certain head movements? Perhaps you have been diagnosed with a vestibular disorder such as Menieres disease, labyrinthitis, vestibular neuritis or BPPV. Vestibular issues can be a result of a variety of problems including inner ear issues, infections, head trauma or diseases. Symptoms may include dizziness, vertigo, unsteadiness, visual issues, nausea, vomiting, headaches, fatigue and poor concentration.
The vestibular system includes part of your inner ear that senses head position and movement. Your brain uses inputs from this system along with your visual system and your muscles and joints to help maintain balance and orientation as you move. When these systems are not working well together symptoms can occur.
Vestibular rehabilitation is an exercise-based program designed by a specially trained physiotherapist to reduce problems related to dizziness and improve balance. The type of exercises prescribed will depend on the vestibular related problem identified in the assessment and may include habituation exercises, gaze stabilization exercises and/or balance training.
