Why Seniors Thrive at Our Multidisciplinary Clinic!

Why Seniors Thrive at Our Multidisciplinary Clinic

Seniors thrive at our multidisciplinary clinic, improving function & maintaining independence.
June is Seniors Health Month, and supporting people as they level up is one of our priorities!

Our bodies change as we age, but this doesn’t have to lead to deteriorating health and loss of independence.

There is so much that can be done to optimize health and maintain independence as you age.

Health at every age is multifaceted.

Though we often separate the different aspects of health, they all interact and impact one another. This is true when one area is suffering and impacting others negatively, and also true when we start to bolster one area of health and see the positive impacts spread.

This is one of the reasons we are a multidisciplinary team. No one discipline can provide all the expertise,  but together they can address many aspects of health and help individuals maximize their health.

Comprehensive Care Matters

One of the challenges many people face as they age is a growing list of health concerns and diagnoses.

There are many aspects to our health and the issues we experience are often interconnected. For many, this means seeking out help from various professionals who each have their area of expertise.

It can be difficult to tackle all the various components of your health while running around to multiple clinics, repeating your story over and over again with very little communication going on between health care providers.

What we often hear from clients is that they feel like their days are spent going from appointment to appointment.

When the professionals with the expertise you require are spread across the city, just getting to appointments can take up a lot of time.

This becomes a deterrent to receiving care, especially for seniors who may have additional mobility challenges or who may no longer be driving.

As a multidisciplinary clinic, we bring together health care professionals of different specialities under one roof to facilitate a holistic and comprehensive approach to care, considering the whole person to help improve their quality of life.

Having multiple disciplines in one clinic is a huge benefit for clients!

  • Convenient and reduces travel
  • Facilitates collaboration between clinicians (with your consent of course!) and therefore fewer gaps in care and less repetition (for you!)
  • Different professionals can offer multiple perspectives on one issue making treatment plans more effective

Our clinicians work together and understand what each discipline has to offer. When one of our clinicians refers you to another discipline, you can be confident there is good reasoning as to how it will help you.

In situations where clinicians suspect another discipline would be helpful but aren't totally sure, they have the opportunity to speak directly to a clinician with that expertise to see if it would be a valuable addition. You can trust that if you are referred to another service that it will be helping you reach your goals!

How Can Our Team and Services Help You?

Since our clinic’s inception, seniors' health has been an area of focus. We’ve fostered that across disciplines so our team can help the community move well, live well, be well throughout their lifespan.

Not everyone will need support from each discipline, but it’s helpful to know how each can support you so that when you need it, you can seek out the services you need.

Physiotherapy and Kinesiology

Physiotherapists and Kinesiologists work in the same domain with different focuses.

Physiotherapists assess and treat using a variety of modalities which can include exercise, education, hands on therapy (manual therapy), ultrasound, acupuncture, and laser therapy.

Kinesiologists carry out the exercise and movement portion of treatment. They use movement to help people address health concerns, injuries, improve function and maintain independence.

In cases where seniors are not able to get to the clinic, or would prefer services to come to them, we offer  in home physiotherapy and kinesiology services.

Our Physiotherapists and Kinesiologist help seniors:

  • Improve balance, prevent falls and increase confidence in moving around their homes and communities
  • Manage osteoporosis and bone health
  • Combat age related changes to muscle mass
  • Manage osteoarthritis
  • Manage pain non pharmacologically, which can in some cases reduce the need for pain medication and help reduce concerns about medication interactions and negative side effects
  • Maintain independence and can support living at home for as long as able
  • Prepare for and recover from surgeries
  • By recommending, fitting and teaching them how to use gait aids when needed (We have a physiotherapist who can also help you apply for government funding to help with the purchase of certain gait aids! Learn more about ADP

We have Physiotherapists with additional training in Pelvic Health that can help seniors address incontinence, issues with urinary frequency, increased urination at night,  pelvic organ prolapse, painful urination or bowel movements and more.

Physiotherapy helps seniors improve their function & maintain their independence.

Massage Therapy

Massage Therapy is a hands-on therapeutic treatment that is used to help address injury, health conditions and improve general health & wellness.

Massage therapists work on soft tissue (like muscles!) to treat and prevent dysfunction and pain, and to maintain, rehabilitate and improve physical function.

Massage Therapists can help seniors:

  • Reduce pain and stiffness in muscles and joints to help with overall mobility
  • Relaxation, stress relief and improved sleep
  • Increase lymphatic drainage and improve immune system functioning

Osteopathy

Osteopathic Manual Practitioners (OMPs) use manual (hands on) therapy to get to the root cause of the symptoms that are limiting your mobility, causing pain, or getting in your way!

A common analogy used to describe what OMPs do is to think of a garden hose with a kink in. The longer that kink impedes the water from getting to the garden, the more the garden will suffer. Once the hose is unkinked, the garden can thrive! OMPs are looking to do the same for your body - using manual therapy to allow your body to self heal, self regulate and thrive!

Osteopathy can help seniors:

  • Address aches and pains
  • Improve and maintain mobility
  • Address postural stiffness
  • Address swelling and poor circulation

Osteopathy helps seniors address aches and pains while improving mobility!

Nutrition

What we eat provides us with the energy we need for the day, and ensures our cells and systems have what they need to work optimally.

It’s not uncommon for seniors to have symptoms like low energy, dizziness and cognitive difficulties that can in some cases be improved with some focus on nutrition!

There are also many common health concerns that can benefit from specific nutritional support, such as osteoporosis, heart disease, high cholesterol, diabetes, inflammatory conditions (and more!).

Our Registered Dietitian can help seniors:

  • Manage blood sugars, blood pressure and cholesterol levels
  • Improve gastrointestinal symptoms
  • Manage inflammatory conditions
  • Support bone and muscle health through nutrition
  • Facilitate overall healthier eating patterns
  • Through education and coaching to support energy and cognitive function

Psychotherapy

The seasons of life present us with different joys and challenges.

Retirement, the death of loved ones, transitioning to retirement homes, changes in health, changes in activities and involvement in the community can all be significant stressors as we age.

Seniors face challenges that can impact mental health and it’s not uncommon for people to experience anxiety, depressive symptoms and increased stress.

Our Registered Psychotherapist can help seniors:

  • Manage depression, low mood, and general anxiety
  • Address fears around daily life such as fears of falling, driving etc.
  • Address anxiety and fears surrounding medical appointments, health diagnoses and changes in health
  • Address social withdrawal or isolation
  • Navigate big life changes such as retirement, moving, the death of partners, friends and other loved ones

Life is meant to be enjoyed! And one of the best things you can do to help yourself enjoy life is to invest in your health.

As we age many things change, but one of the constants is a desire to live a good life, to be able to do the things you enjoy and interact with the world around you. This is possible throughout your lifespan with the right support and team around you.

Our multidisciplinary team is here to help seniors optimize health as they age, and stay active participants in their life!
