What is Physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy is a health care profession focused on preventing and managing pain, physical impairments and disabilities which may limit participation in work, sport or daily activities. Physiotherapy treatment aims to help you move well, feel well, and be well!

Physiotherapy can include a number of different modalities, and at its core the goal of treatment is to help eradicate pain, and get you moving better - with more ease, confidence and strength.

Physiotherapists have in-depth training in anatomy, physiology and human movement which positions them to assess, treat and manage a wide variety of conditions and injuries. Physiotherapists understand movement and they know how to get you moving and keep you moving!

What does Physiotherapy Treatment Look Like?

Your first appointment will be an assessment. Your physiotherapist will take a detailed health history and find out what’s bothering you. They’ll ask lots of questions to understand your unique circumstances and goals.

Next, your physiotherapist will perform some tests to assess how you’re moving and gain a better understanding of what’s happening in your body. Be prepared to move a little here!

Once your physiotherapist has gathered your history and performed tests specific to your concerns, they’ll propose a treatment plan. As long as it’s appropriate, your first visit will include treatment. Treatment could include: manual therapy, exercise, movement, acupuncture, ultrasound, laser, paraffin wax, or cold therapy.

You’ll leave with a plan for how to move forward and maybe even a little homework - but don’t worry! We provide videos, pictures and written instructions to help you remember your exercises so you can perform them at home.

Do I need a referral or note from my doctor for physiotherapy ?

You do not need a doctor's note to come see a physiotherapist. If you have extended health benefits, they may require a note from your doctor. Contact your provider for details.

How long will it take for me to feel better?

There are a number of different factors that will impact your healing timeline. At your assessment, your physiotherapist will provide you with a rough idea of how long and how often you’ll need treatment. Your physiotherapist can also give you an idea of how soon you can anticipate seeing some improvement.

I’ve been dealing with this issue for a long time, can Physiotherapy really help?

Sarah Micks is amazing! I experienced a tennis elbow injury on my dominant left arm that was really aggravating me. She was able to understand and adhere to my needs to recommend exercises that would allow me to engage in physical activities and daily life activities in the short and long term. In 2 months of physio with Sarah, my arm is feeling nearly 100% again.

Thanks so much to Sarah and the Fit for Life Team for accommodating my schedule as soon as I called in for treatment!

Highly recommend to those seeking effective, efficient, and friendly help!

7 months ago Wendy Hancock is a spectacular physiotherapist. Not only is she highly skilled and educated in her craft, she truly takes the time needed to determine the root cause of your pain or discomfort and explains her proposed treatment plan in great detail until she is certain you understand everything. She takes the time that you need and has a wonderful listening ear. Many times, what I thought was the source of my pain was not the source at all and Wendy determined what needed to be done and I left pain free! I simply cannot recommend her services enough!

After suffering with limited mobility for 4 months due to pain and discomfort in my foot, I went to Fit For Life.
Physiotherapists Lesley and Natalie were able to determine the cause of the pain, and provide treatment. Within days I was able to walk almost pain free. I have my life back! They also provided me with easy to follow exercises to help me maintain the function of my foot. They are both compassionate, patient and knowledgeable. Thanks Lesley and Natalie!
